What is an Independent Medical Exam?

“If you’ve been on claim more than six months, and you’ve been going to the doctor at the same frequency, you’re on the same medications, it’s the same thing on the claim form. That’s when your insurance company is going to ask for an independent medical exam. Do I have to go? Oftentimes, clients ask me that. Yes, there’s a duty to cooperate in your policy. But it doesn’t mean we have to go to the doctor in a wrong specialty, or they want us to go three hours to a doctor to be examined. If I’ve got a neck problem, they can’t send me to a podiatrist. If I’ve got an eye problem, they can’t send me to anybody but an ophthalmologist. You need the right doctor in the right specialty, and make sure it’s not too far from home.”
