The term ERISA is one many people have likely heard. Short for the Employment Retirement Income Security Act, despite having heard the acronym, many people may not be aware of what it is, and how it affects them.
This act applies to most people who are employed in the United States and receive group disability, life or medical benefits, from their employers. Over 40 years old, the act governs the application of these plans. In the course of doing so, it provides consumers few rights or remedies.
