HEALTH AND WELLNESS IN THE NEW YEAR, INSURANCE TIPS FROM DISABILITY INSURANCE EXPERT, FRANK N. DARRAS

The New Year brings new health and wellness goals, from exercising to diet to meditation. Injuries due to competitive sports may be more common than what the typical individual might sustain from working out at their local gym but they all can be just as incapacitating. Disability insurance can provide some peace of mind for those who can’t afford to take time off of work due to an unanticipated injury.

“Accidents can happen without warning, even if the proper precautions have been taken to prevent injury,” says Frank N. Darras, America’s top disability insurance lawyer. “Purchasing a disability insurance policy may seem like a waste of money but even if you’re careful, something could happen unexpectedly. Disability insurance is there to provide financial sustenance while the breadwinner misses work to recuperate from an injury.”

Prevent common injuries by taking the proper precautions such as warming-up and cooling-down during each exercise session. By learning proper techniques and starting out slow, beginners can avoid mistakes that could lead to injury. Cross training is another approach to prevent harm by working different muscles on varying days of the week to keep from overusing specific muscle groups. As always, be sure to keep proper form while exercising by partnering with a trainer at the gym. (The Top 20 Fitness Mistakes Beginners Make, WebMd, January 2014)

According to the Daily Herald, as the exercise gets tough, it’s easy to lose focus and do whatever it takes to get those last few reps in. Sometimes you can get away with questionable form, but other times it can lead to injury. One common mistake many people make is not engaging their core during exercise. For example, if you’re squatting and you lose tension of your abdominal wall, your spine could round and become compromised. The low back may strain as it gets forced into less than ideal biomechanics. (Five common exercise mistakes to avoid: Daily Herald, January 17, 2014)

A recent article in the Washington Post states, “dozens of fitness and diet plans exist to choose from and it’s essential to partner with a physician or nutritionist to find a plan that will work for you. Diet is also extremely important in order for the body to get the fuel it needs to maintain optimal health. Maintain proper nutrition to keep the body healthy by eating the right balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat. Staying hydrated and fueled with the right nutrients will have a beginner well on their way to a healthier lifestyle.” (Nutrition: Best to eat before and after exercise: The Washington Post, January 17, 2014)

“Don’t lose confidence or motivation!” says Darras. “Find an exercise routine you enjoy doing and everything will fall into place. Along with exercise, you’ll have your diet to help keep your body healthy, and a disability insurance policy to keep you financially stable in the event of a serious injury.”
